Radar Plotting Exercises

Radar navigation, radar plotting and use of ARPA

Exercises

The rather bright ould guy who invented and markets the excellent Sea-Me radar transponder has just produced a good radar plotting device, which looks better and more useful than t'other stuff I've seen and used. And I've used a few. 2 plotting exercises on a radar simulator by transfer plotting to a radar transfer-plotting sheet (90% on each required to pass). You will plot targets graphically (e.g. Rapid-radar plotting technique) to correctly derive solutions and determine own ship’s position while underway.

Radar navigation and ship collision avoidance An Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) in excel version - Marine freeware software. The officer on watch must be able to maneuver the ship in any conditions: adverse weather and sea conditions, high-density traffic areas. He must be able to navigate 'blind' too. Radar Plotting Radar Plotting. RADAR (radio detection and ranging) Click here to see glossary of RADAR terms. This is the first of many videos I hope to include here to help refresh memories or to get a head start before going for that original or radar refresher course.

We’ll use these to plot lines of position (LOP) on a nautical chart, plotting work sheet, or a simple graph paper to determine the position of the ship. The data we need are: true altitude, LHA/declination, computed (estimated) altitude and azimuth. We can use this simple excel file to verify (or avoid) the manual calculations! Step-by-Step Marine Chart Plotting. Using a parallel plotter (preferably with rollers), draw a straight line from your departure point to your destination, or the first turn in your course. Draw as many course lines as you need to complete your trip. Lay one edge of the parallel rulers along the line you drew.

Course code: D6A

Scope (Target audience) : The course has been designed to meet requirements of STCW section B-1/12 and is based on the guidelines of IMO Model Course 1.07, objectives 1-5.
Course provides training in the basic theory and use of Radar for those who will be in charge of a navigational watch.

Objective : The course covers, the theory necessary for understanding how radar information is obtained and displayed, the limitations and accuracy of information, the recognition of critical targets, the measurement of bearing and distances, and the use of these for fixing the ship's position and maintaining a plot of the movement of other ships as an aid to collision avoidance. Exercises in the application of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea ( COLREG 1972) will make use of the resulting plots.

Course content :

  • Familiarization with the Simulator’s “Own Ship” characteristics and control
  • Review of basic radar and plotting
  • Open water exercises in the application of colreg 1972
  • Exercises in and near traffic separation schemes

Duration: 21 hours

Prerequisite :

  • Identification card or passport

Approved by :
